How to Vet an Influencer and Spot Fake Followers

A checklist for brands to check whether an influencer's audience is real, engaged and right for the campaign before booking.

How to Vet an Influencer and Spot Fake Followers

A large follower count means little if the audience is not real or not relevant. Vetting a creator before you pay protects your budget. Use this checklist.

1. Look at engagement, not only followers

Compare average views, likes, comments and saves with follower count. Very low engagement on a large account can signal inactive or purchased followers. Very high likes with generic comments can also be suspicious.

2. Read the comments

Real comments reference the content. Be cautious of long runs of emojis, one-word replies or the same comment repeated by different accounts.

3. Check growth patterns

Sudden jumps in followers that do not match viral content can indicate purchased followers. Ask the creator to explain big spikes.

4. Ask for audience insights

Request screenshots of audience location, age, gender and top cities. For UAE campaigns, check that the audience is based in the UAE or the markets you care about.

5. Review past collaborations

Look at previous sponsored content. Does it feel natural? Did the creator deliver on time? On YallaCreator you can read reviews from brands that worked with the creator.

6. Check content quality and fit

Is the style consistent? Does the creator work with competitors all the time? Does the audience match your customer?

7. Check compliance

Ask for the UAE Advertiser Permit number and confirm that the creator displays it. See our Advertiser Permit guide. Look for the blue tick on YallaCreator, which shows verified identity and licensed advertiser status.

8. Start small

Test with one package before committing to a larger or monthly arrangement. A small trial shows how the creator communicates, delivers and performs.

9. Use safe payments

Pay through the platform so your money is held until you approve the work. Avoid paying everything upfront outside a protected system.

Red flags

  • Refusal to share audience data.
  • Prices far below or above similar creators with no reason.
  • Pressure to decide quickly.
  • Vague deliverables.
  • Reluctance to sign or agree to a clear brief.
